Have you ever been to a good dinner party that ended at 9.30pm? I very much doubt it. Starters are the warm up to the main entertainment, and the raucous laughter and gossip doesn’t get going until everyone’s put away at least half a bottle of wine. And if you plan to wake early, that’s exactly the time when you have to excuse yourself and traipse home. Even on weekends, without the threat of work the next day, it’s difficult to cope past midnight after a week’s worth of early mornings. If you want to be the first one awake, be prepared to give up your social life.

American academics have found cold hard proof that waking up early is a bad idea. Early risers are more likely to behave dishonestly and cheat during night time hours, as their energy levels decrease throughout the day. The study found that people who woke early were more likely to lie about their test performance than those that slept late. And an earlier study from the University of Westminster in London found that people who wake early had higher levels of stress hormones throughout the day. Oh, and early risers are more likely to complain of muscle aches, colds, headaches and mood swings. Those extra hours in bed are sounding even more appealing.

The only way to make it through those painfully early morning starts is with the help of caffeine—and no scrimping on the cup size. Espresso will replace water as your standard drink and, with hammering heart and shaking hands, your old friend coffee with help you through the day.
