2014年4月口语Part 2重难点话题解析: A wild animal
The other day, I watched a TV program named “The nature and human”. Basically, it was showing some unique animals that are far from human’s sight. Some kind of python and baboons in the desert or in the jungle or something like that.
But one specific species of animals caught my eye. It’s a kind of lizard. I don’t know what its scientific name is. But there is scale and shell covering all over its body and make it look like a pine cone. So its Chinese name is pine cone lizard. Unlike other lizards, its tail is short and is like a triangle. Look from a distance, its tail and its head appear the same. I think it’s an adaptation that this kind tail can misguide the predators. When it gets attacked, the predators may attack its tail rather than head by mistake, and the lizard may have a chace to get away.
What impressed is not how it looks. It’s the habit. This kind of lizard, they live in the desert. Once it choose its mate. It would devote to its mate for their entire life for about twenty years. At ordinary times, they have to hunt for food separatedly in the huge desert. But when it comes the mating season, they would somehow manage to find each other and spend some time together to breed. It’s amazing.
You know. There are some highways across the desert. Trying to get across the highway would become very risky for those creatures ‘cause they are not swift-moving animals. They creep very slowly. Provided that the cars on the road are moving very fast and the careless driver often fail to keep away from the lizards on the road. So sometimes cars run over them and kill them, Which is really sad. If one lizard of the couple get killed, what the other one would do is that it would stick around the dead one’s body, look at it, lick its body as if the dead one is still alive. It just wouldn’t leave. It would make accompany for days. That really made me teary-eyed when I watched it. I mean, we can learn some humanity that even some human lack of on a cold blood animal. It’s kind of ironic. It got me self-questioning that sometimes we are no better than the animals. We need to make a change and take care of the livings.
