As everyone knows, no one can deny that history is the most important things for human society. However, whether university students ought to be required to take history courses, opinions diverge on the issue. As a university student, I claim that we should have our own right to choose courses in university, so school couldn’t require us to take any courses include history. There are some reasons follow.
First of all, we have already studied the basic knowledge of history before university. Since we went to school, we have been required to study history for 12 years. It covered almost basic knowledge of history which we need to learn. And the university students should develop their major deeply. So continue to take history courses is a waste of time and it will put more academic pressure on students.
Moreover, university may impose financial burden on students and parents by demands all the students take history courses no matter what their major is. Nowadays the finance of education increase rapidly. Though only taking major courses, the tuition is more than 10 thousands for one year. Plus students must pay a lot of money for books and references as well as research programs in order to graduate successfully.
The last but not the least, university students have been old enough to make up our own mind. We know what we need and we also have the ability of managing our study time. University hasn’t the right to limit our selectivity. If some of the students would like to draw themselves from history to gain knowledge, they can take history courses as elective courses or be guest students.
All in all, I disagree that history should be made compulsory for university students.
It will make students overburdened both academically and financially. Besides, enough power of students to choose our academic courses won’t only enrich our interest in different subject but also advance our self-motivated.
