An Important Leader
Leaders like John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King have made important contributions to the people of the United States. Name another world leader you think is important. Give specific reasons for your choice.
The leader I admire is the politician of Germany – Willy Grandt. He made contribution not only to the Germany, but also to the relationship between Germany and Poland, Soviet Union and so on. He did great in his political life. I will pick up some of his events to explain why he is the one I admire.
At first, he made his country united and improved the economic conditions of Germany. He established a policy called Neue Ostpolitik, which means New Eastern Policy in English. This policy was established on the base of Grandt’s realization that the relationship between Eastern and Western Germany was not just about the Berlin Wall and if they only pushed down the Wall, it would make no sense for the union of the whole country. So he emphasized in the new policy that the relationship should be enhanced step by step. And then, it turned out there was no fierce actions between the two sides in that period and the relationship developed gradually as he wished. Additionally, he paid a lot of attention on the economic conditions of both the Eastern and the Western Germany, which also assisted the union of the Germany.
Besides, Grandt had a new attitude towards the diplomatic affairs. He came to visit the Soviet Union to end the cold war between them. And when he visited the Poland, not only did he make an announcement to solve the boundary conflict between their two countries, but also he kneeled down towards the Jewish gravestones. In his action, he represented the Germany to regret the guilty crimes caused by Nazi in the Second World War. This action astonished the people all over the world and told them loudly that the Germany had moved on and hoped to make up the hurts happened in the WWⅡ. In that year, Grandt won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to the peace of the world and also showed in the Front Page of TIME.
The gorgeous leader usually had an extraordinary time when he was young. Grandt was the same. During the Second World War, when he was not a politician in Germany, he travelled through the countries around Germany to attend and organize the anti-fascist activities, which helped his country in an indirect way.
Although Grandt was born in a shop assistant’s home and had a miserable childhood, he knew his political mission through his life and insisted on that no matter how terrible the outer environment was. He led the Germany go into a new time after the world war. And I think he deserves the respect from the world.
