Everybody needs a pastime to help them get through a long winter. For some people, it's waxing hyperbolic* about how bad the weather really is.

It's hard to look at the big picture when you're just trying to get to work without slipping on the ice—or trying to fly anywhere over the past few months. Continual heavy snowfalls and polar vortices over the Northeast, Midwest, and even the South have made it feel as though the world is in a deep freeze, which inevitably has led to the return of "It's cold where I live, therefore, climate change isn't real."

In case you didn't get the memo to disbelieve anything you see on social media, these photos are not, in fact, depicting a frozen ice wave in the Great Lakes, despite what was said in the captions as the images circulated via Facebook and Twitter. It was a cold winter in the Upper Midwest, and the Great Lakes have largely frozen over. But it's not that cold. In fact, these pictures come from a set taken a decade ago in Antarctica.

Nope. As Pop Mech reported a couple of weeks ago, the real reason is far less conspiratorial: Cities and states have to estimate in advance how much salt they'll need to keep their roads clear through the winter. When a particularly snowy winter comes along, everybody runs short and orders more at the same time, creating a bottleneck. And in some cases, red tape adds to the mess by preventing perfectly good salt from getting where it was needed, as in the peculiar case of New Jersey and Maine.

America has lots and lots of salt; we just can't always get it where it needs to be at the right time. There certainly are suppliers (and opportunists) charging more for salt during a scarcity, but that's economics, not a wide-ranging conspiracy.

All That Rock Salt Is Damaging Your Concrete

People spread rock salt on concrete pavements to battle snow and ice, and when the concrete flakes away, they incorrectly assume the rock salt is to blame. Here's the truth: When exterior concrete is properly mixed, installed, and finished, it will resist the freeze-thaw cycle created by ice and snow melting and refreezing. Proper exterior concrete is known as air-entrained. It has chemicals (called admixtures) added to it that create millions of microscopic air pockets in its surface. These air pockets prevent damage from the freeze-thaw cycle by allowing ice crystals to form and expand without breaking the surface apart. If the concrete was not properly mixed or properly installed, it lacks these air pockets. Whether you use rock salt or other deicers will not make a difference: The freeze-thaw cycle damages the concrete and causes surface flaking.

It Will Never End

It only feels that way. Barring the truly unusual, winter will end as it always does with the Vernal Equinox, the first day of spring. This year, it occurs on March 20 at 12:57 pm ET. Astronomically speaking, the equinox happens twice yearly when the tilt of the Earth's axis is neither toward nor away from the sun*, giving the Earth an equal number of hours of daylight and night.

Of course, this has no direct effect whether it feels like spring or winter. Some of the largest snowfalls ever recorded have occurred in April or even May. Consider the 24.6 inches of snow that fell in Akron, Ohio, on April 19 and 20, 1901.
