Tablets fail to attract US students

It’s common to see Chinese students holding iPads in their dormitory to in class to watch a TV drama or play games.  But surprisingly, tablets are not being embraced by US college students.  Recent data shows that less than one third of them own such a device, reported The Star-Ledger.

According to the study from Ball State University in the US, approximately 29 percent of students indicated owning a tablet this year, a slight drop since 2013, when it was 28 percent.  The most popular tablet is the iPad, with 14.2 percent owning the device.

Michael Hanley, professor of advertising and director of Ball State University’s Institute for Mobile Media Research, believes that students are not embracing tablets because of their lack of educational functions.

“Tablets are for entertainment purposes, not for writing papers and doing class projects – key components of higher education.” Hanley told EContent magazine.

It’s a statement many students agree with.  Kaitlin Springer, a sophomore at Sam Houston State University, received a tablet as a gift but rarely uses it.

“I only use my tablet when on social media,” Springer told The Star-Ledger.  “I keep it at home simply because I don’t use it a lot and I never use it for academic purpose.”

Hanley said students are more likely to buy tablets after they graduate, but mainly to watch movies, play games and access social media.  “After graduation and getting a job, you can afford to splurge on entertainment,” Hanley explained.
