5 things not to do in your new job

You spent weeks, maybe months, applying for jobs. You got through that tough interview and was, at last, hired in a position that you think is a perfect fit. The hard part is over and now you can relax right? Well, not exactly.

The tone you set in your first days and weeks at the new job can affect how you're perceived during your entire tenure with your new company. As you've heard many times before, first impressions are critical. You may think that because you have the tech skills needed in the new job that everything will be a breeze. But here are a few "don'ts" that you might keep in mind as you set about becoming a part of a new company culture.

Heed the dress code
In many companies, IT has a more lax dress code. However, in some industries, like finance, you'll find that even IT is held to a more formal dress code. This may or may not be made clear in your employee orientation so it's a good idea to ask.
Of course, there might not even be a formal orientation in some companies. If not, and you look around and see many of your coworkers in tee shirts and jeans, it's easy to make the assumption that anything goes in the attire you choose to wear. And maybe you want take advantage of the laid-back atmosphere and wear your flip-flops to work. Don't. Ask first. Sometimes what you perceive as casual and what others--particularly your bosses--perceive as casual can be radically different.
It may seem like a small thing to wear something inappropriate to work but it's things like that that people add onto in their initial perception of you and it's hard to live those things down.
