There is another, equally important function of eye contact. It enables you to monitor the effects you are having on your audience. Only by observing you listeners can you read their behaviors. Only through eye contact can you tell whether they’re happy or sad, confused or enlightened. In other words, most of the feedback you receive(besides laughter and applause) comes through eye contact.

Clearly, maintaining eye contact with an audience is a circle skill; but a number of things may interfere. The most common obstacle, especially among beginners, is a set of notes. When speakers feel insecure, they want a crutch; the crutch frequently takes the form of extensive notes. Of course, when they have too many notes, they tend to use them, and when they’re looking at their notes, they can’t maintain eye contact.

Effective use of eye contact, which comes with practice, should allow each person in your audience to feel that you are speaking directly to him or her. If your audience is small enough, this can be accomplished by sweeping the group, allowing your eyes to rest on each person from time to time. With a larger audience, this is impossible. In such a case, focus on sections of the audience——first on one section, then another.
