Scientists indicate native mantises can hardly resist the "fatal attraction" of alien species. Exotic mantises have cannibalistic habits, and the female individuals will devour their partners after mating.


一份11月26日发表在《生物学通讯》(Biology Letters )的研究显示,公纽西兰螳螂(学名Orthodera novaezealandiae)在受到母斑光螳螂(学名Miomantis caffra)引诱后,会把自己当做大餐自动奉上。

A study published in Biology Letters on November 26th shows, the male New Zealand Mantises(Scientific name: Orthodera novaezealandiae) will sacrifice themselves as feasts after lured by female Springbok Mantises(Scientific name: Miomantis caffra)

这个研究结果指出,由于南非外来侵入种的母螳螂会散发难以抵挡的气味,才让原生种的公螳螂掉进这危险诱惑里。

The study pointed out that, only because the exotic female mantises from South Africa release irresistible odor, the native male mantises fall into this deadly temptation.


而当初,其实是奥克兰大学(University of Auckland)的生物学家为了调查造成纽西兰螳螂减少的不明原因,才发现了这个现象。

In fact, in the first place, it was the biologists from University of Auckland who investigated the unexplained reduction of New Zealand Mantis only to find the phenomenon.


「我们怀疑原生种减少的肇因起自斑光螳螂,但在我们进行研究以前,并没有这两种螳螂的互动资料,」研究共同发表人葛雷格.霍尔威尔(Greg Holwell)在电子邮件中表示。

"We suspect the reduction of native species comes from Springbok Mantises, but there was no information regarding interactions between the two species before we studied them." the study copresenter, Greg Holwell, so indicated in an e-mail.

为了特别观察南非侵入种会吃掉同类的交配习性,研究团队把这两种螳螂带到实验室中各自公母配对来加以观察。

In order to observe the cannibalistic mating behavior of the South Africa exotic species, the research team paired the two species respectively in the laboratory.   


螳螂就和蛾或其他昆虫一样,母螳螂通常将性费洛蒙(sex pheromones)散播在空气中来吸引公螳螂,而先前的研究则指出不同种螳螂的费洛蒙可能有一定程度的相同成分。

Just like moths or other insects, female mantises generally release sex pheromones in the air to attract males. Previous studies have indicated pheromones among different mantises species might have the same ingredients to some degree. 


因此,研究团队便着重在跨种促合时,母螳螂释出性费洛蒙后的相关诱引反应。

Thus, the research team then focused on the relevant induced reaction after female mantises release sex pheromones, when cross-species mating is matched.


根据研究发表内容,在13个促合个案中,出人意料地有多达11只公纽西兰螳螂对母斑光螳螂的气味比与自己同种的母螳螂气味更感兴趣。 

According to the contents of the study, in thirteen matched cases, Surprisingly there were up to 11 male New Zealand mantises show more interests toward female Springbok Mantises than to their counterparts.


而且,大部分的实验个案也证实这是一条公螳螂的不归路:69%的跨种交配结果是以公螳螂被吞噬作收。

Besides, most cases also confirm it is a road of no return to male mantises: 69% cross-species mating ended in male mantises being devoured.

公斑光螳螂则较懂得如何应付它们可怕的另一半,因此仅有39%成为母斑光螳螂的腹中食。

Male Springbok Mantises know how to deal with their hideous mates more, thus only 39% were eaten by female Springbok Mantises.


霍尔威尔观察到:就是因为母纽西兰螳螂「并未或很少出现交配后同类相食的习性,所以公纽西兰螳螂就不会像公斑光螳螂那样谨慎地接近另一半。 」

What Holwell discovered was: It was because female New Zealand mantises “ do not or rarely show cannibalistic habits, male New Zealand mantises do not show such carefulness like the male Springbok Mantises when approaching the females.

Death Pheromones


螳螂的性费洛蒙可散播很长一段距离,因此一只没有伴侣的母斑光螳螂或许会和数量可观的公纽西兰螳螂进行交配。

The sex pheromones of mantises can spread for a long distance, so a female Springbok Mantis with no spouse may mate with a considerable number of male New Zealand mantises.


而研究团队更指出,原生种螳螂的减少极可能形成侵入种的优势,因为这些被迷昏头的公螳螂,就成了母螳螂饱餐一顿后的滋补养分。

And the research team further pointed out that, the reduction of native mantises is very likely to form exotic species dominance, since the charmed male mantises become nutrition to female mantises after feasted.


研究团队也怀疑,在昆虫和蛛形类(arachnid)世界中可能还存在许多这种跨种交配的惊人案例。

The research team also suspected in insecta and arachnid world, there may be more astonishing cases of such cross-species mating.


「天真单纯的原生种接触了这种同类相食的侵入种,最后下场就变得格外戏剧化,」霍尔威尔下了结论。

Innocent native species meeting such cannibalistic exotic species, their end become particularly dramatic, Holwell so concluded.
