The conference was held by a young radio astronomist named Frank‧Drake, who was so obsessed with the thought of finding alien radio signals.

现年84岁的德雷克还记得,在他召集这场会议当时,寻找外星智慧(search for extraterrestrial intelligence,简称SETI)「基本上是天文学的禁忌」。
Now 84 years old, Drake still recalls when he convoked the meeting, "searching for extraterrestrial intelligence"(abbreviated as SETI)was fundamentally a prohibition in astronomy.

他集结了一小群天文学家、化学家、生物学家与工程师,共同讨论我们现在所说的太空生物学,也就是研究外星生命的科学。
He assembled a small group of astronomers, chemists biologists and engineers to discuss the now so-called astrobiology, that is, the science that studies extraterrestrial life.

德雷克尤其希望取得专家的协助,以判断是否值得投注大量时间用无线电波望远镜倾听外星讯号,并找出最有希望获得成果的搜寻方式。
Drake especially wished to receive assistance from experts to determine if it is worth taking loads of time listening to extraterrestrial signals with radiotelescope; and besides, to find out the most promising search method.

他也好奇:按照合理的推算,究竟可能有多少外星文明存在?因此在客人抵达之前,他在黑板上潦草地写下了一个公式。
He also wondered: In accordance with reasonable calculations, how many extraterrestrial civilizations may exist? Thus, he hastily wrote down a formula on the blackboard before guests arrived.

那个潦草写下的公式就是今日赫赫有名的德雷克公式,它勾勒出了回答这个问题的过程。

That hastily written formula is the now well-known Drake equation, which outlined the progress on how the question was answered.
