Following the tragedy of Malaysia Airlines MH17 which came just four months after flight MH370 went missing, the struggling airline could be facing bankruptcy.

According to international law, Malaysia Airlines is responsible for making initial payments of about $150, 000 to the families of each deceased passengers on both flights.

There could also well be lawsuits to fight over charges of negligence in flying over disputed airspace. Experts say those alone wouldn’t break the bank, but if travelers started to avoid the airline that could be a problem. Malaysia Airlines is now offering full ticket refunds for anyone who wants to cancel a trip between now and the end of December.

This year so far, Malaysia Airlines shares have declined 36 percent. It has not been able to make a profit in the past three years amid fierce competition and high oil price, have resulted in a total loss of about 1.3 billion USD over that period.

Although bankruptcy could be a possibility for the airline, some experts say that Malaysia’s government owns nearly 70% of the company. It will seek ways for the carrier to avoid that fate.
