It's not always easy being a pet owner in land-scarce Hong Kong. But on Sunday a bus load of dog owners took advantage of a new bus service that gives their pooches an opportunity to run around pet-friendly parks.

Pets are not allowed on most public transport, pet parks are few and far and taxis for long distances can be expensive. But what began as a Facebook campaign started by three frustrated pet lovers in 2012 has now become a regular Sunday affair, allowing pets and their owners to travel to one of the eighteen pet-friendly parks across the city.

Founder, Kamric To, calls the service "99 Bus" because "99" sounds like "dogs" in Cantonese.

Since its launch, over 1,000 pet owners have taken advantage of the bus service. On Sunday, the bus made two trips bringing dozens of pet owners to Penfold Park, the biggest dog park in Hong Kong.

Cammy To said she used the bus service to help her dog, Pearl, to socialise.

Depending on the distance, a round trip costs around between 8 US dollars to 13 dollars per person with a two hour stop at a park. Playing with her three dogs in Penfold Park, situated inside a horse racing course, 18-year-old student Tiffany Leung said it was her third trip and that her dogs loved travelling by bus.

According to 2011 government statistics, around 167,000 Hong Kong families have dogs, representing 7 percent of all households in the territory.

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world with animals and humans often coexisting in tiny flats no bigger than 450 square feet. To hopes his service will provide pet owners and their dogs a better and more efficient way to enjoy their time together.
