By contrast, the political intent of some art may be to sooth rather than to inflame passions. The Vietnam War deeply divided the people of the United States. There was a desire to create a memorial to those who died fighting the war, but how could this be done in a way that did not antagonize either the relatives of the deceased or the opponents of the war? In an open competition, the winning solution was created by a young architecture student, Maya Lin.

Her Vietnam VeteransMemorial in Washington D.C., is a very quiet but nonetheless profoundly moving statement about the deaths of Americans in the war. Elegantly and starkly simple, it consists of an angled wall of polished black granite, incised with the names of all the Americans who died in the conflict, and then tapering down to disappear into the earth. In the face of bitter divisions that once existed between proponent and opponents of American involvement in the war, Lin intentionally avoided presenting a blatant political idea. The meaning of the wall is to be discovered individually by each viewer. Lin explains:

Many earlier war memorials were propagandized statements about the victor, the issues the politics, and not about the people who served and died. I felt a memorial should be honest about the reality of war and be for the people who gave their livesI didn’t want a static object that people would just look at, but something they could relate to as on a journey, or passage, that would bring each to his own conclusionsI didn’t visualize heavy physical objects implanted in the earth; instead it was as if the black-brown earth was polished and made into an interface between the sunny world and the quiet, dark would beyond, that we cant enter.
