Adolf Hitler had a clear sense of the tremendous impact of media propaganda and used it extensively and ultimately with tragic effect, to build popular support for his regime. Ludwig Hohlweins poster commissioned for the Nazi regime presents such a powerful visual image that the mere words Und du?(And you?) convey the aggressive challenge to the civilian to become part of the war machine. We are shown only the storm-troopers masculine features, nothing of his individuality; he becomes an abstraction for the idea of the The German Soldier, a superhumanly strong man with the power of the group and the groups history behind him. The angle from which he is shown makes us look up at him, and the deliberate mingling of hero worship, intimidation, and brooding power is characteristic of the totalitarian values of the Nazi regime.

Narrative

Many artworks tell a story. Quite often the story is a spiritual one, commissioned by a religious institution, perhaps intended to give a lesson or to inspire worshippers. The Baroque sculptor and architect GianLorenzo Bernini was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Cardinal Cornaro to build an intimate and ornate chapel honoring himself and his family. As its altarpiece, Bernini created a life-sized sculpture of The Ecstasy of St. Teresa. It illustrates the story in which the saint is speared by an angel in a vision, leaving her “completely afire with love of God.”

Visual stories are often told by means of symbols, such as the representation of God in Michelangelos Creation of Adam as a wise old man in the sky. Symbols are usually designed to be understood by the audience for whom they are made. People form cultures that regard the Ultimate Power as formless or as female would be puzzled by Michelangelos depiction of God.
