I am able to give the answer to this question until right now even I’ve seen it long long ago.

As a young adult who relatively adores listening to Beijing Opera and fond of traditional quyi(Chinese folk art forms) , I have to say that there is quite a lot essence in Beijing opera as well as dross. People of Beijing Opera circles continue walking in the old steps and seclude themselves,  form their own interest groups, sleep without any anxiety relying on the national allowance, haven’t embraced the temporal change or participated in the market competition actively , which led to the decline of Beijing Opera. Xiangsheng(cross talk) has encountered a low ebb, and entered upon a phase of revival by growing fiercely. If our state abandoned Beijing Opera without any support, perhaps it would blaze a new path. People of Beijing Opera circles ought to set it as a kind of entertaining service rather than taking themselves consistently as great artists or masters of the quintessence of Chinese culture.

Let me be specific, first about the cons:

The narrative pace of Beijing Opera is too slow, long and tedious compared with other forms, which can only provide little amusement within limited time.

The facial make-up and costumes used to be considered as artistic are regarded as superfluous, too stylized and tiresome nowadays.

Nian(speaking) and zuo(acting), as parts of basic grounding of chang(singing),nian(speaking),zuo(acting) and da(acrobatic fighting) are all too formalized and too difficult for audience to understand. Once they were symbols of the high development of Beijing Opera, yet it turns to be rigid now. Being almost a fan, I can’t even understand many dialogues without reading the subtitles, acts like ”Zhengguan,Lvran,Duandai”are quite unnecessary, performers are stuck in their own acting, unable to satisfy the audience.

Acrobatic fighting in Beijing Opera was incredibly popular in the past, nevertheless, they are simply unattractive compared with visual effects in current movies and TV shows.

All the so-called tradition above, is supposed to be abandoned to a certain extent.
