To me, it's helpful to frame all of life this way, the positives and the negatives. For instance, I wrote some books (that got published) a few years ago. But I don't think of myself as a guy who wrote books. Those are now sunk costs. I think of myself as a guy who has 40-something years to live. What am I going to do during that time?

And the truth is, I don't even think that way. Yes, we sometimes have to make long-term plans, so (for instance) I'm investing in a 401K. But, for the most part, I focus on now. What do I need now? What do I want now? When I find myself brooding on the past and worrying about the future, it's almost always a sign that I'm not engaged enough in the present.

What engrossing thing are you doing right now? I don't mean how are you distracting yourself? I mean what projects are you working on that are vitally important to you? That give your life intense meaning? If your answer is none, then that's your problem. The past isn't your problem; the present is.

Whenever you're concerned about the past or the future, see if you can reframe it as a concern about the present, which is probably what it really is. Most of the time that we're worried about "then," we're reframing our worries about now to make them less scary.

Let's be conservative and say that you'll die at 70. That means you have over four decades of life ahead of you. You have almost double the amount you've already lived! That's tons of time to do almost anything imaginable. Want to learn to play the piano? You have time! Want to travel around the world? You have time. Want to write a novel? You have time. Want to start a business? You have time. Want to raise a family? You have time. I'm 49, and even I have time to do those things. So what's your excuse?

It's scary to start things, because that brings on the risk of failure. I know that it's scary. But saying, "What's the point? I've wasted too much time" is anexcuse. It's bullshit for a 24-year-old (or a 50-year old) to make that excuse, so quit it. If you don't do anything with the rest of your life, that won't be because you wasted years 1 - 23.
