Climate Change Makes Salamanders Smaller

气候变化致蝾螈体型缩小


American researchers claim that the body size of some salamander species has shrunk over the years because of climate change.

美国的研究人员称,近些年,因为环境变化,某些种类的蝾螈体型缩小了。 


In 1957, Professor Richard Highton of the University of Maryland started his study on salamanders located in the Appalachian  Mountains in North America. For 50 years, he collected thousands of salamanders as samples.

1957年,马里兰大学的专家Richard Highton开始对北美阿帕拉契亚山脉的蝾螈进行研究。他50年内采集了几千只蝾螈作为样本。


On his retirement, he donated the preserved specimens to the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum Service Center in Suitland, Maryland. Highton’s findings revealed that the population of salamanders has reduced from the 1980s onwards.

退休后,他将经过防腐处理的标本捐赠给了马里兰州休特兰市史密森学会博物馆服务中心。Highton的研究结果表明,自20世纪80年代以来,蝾螈的数量减少了。


Karen Lips, associate professor in the University of Maryland, continued Highton’s research. Lips collected salamanders in the same areas to analyze its size and health. By comparing her new findings with Highton’s previous data, Lips’ team found that more than half of the current species were 8% smaller than the samples collected before the 1980s.

马里兰大学的副教授Karen Lips接手了Highton的研究。为分析其体型及健康状况,Lips收集了同一区域的蝾螈。Lips的团队将他们的新发现同之前Highon的数据进行比对后发现,现有的蝾螈种类有半数以上其体型比上世纪80年代采集到的蝾螈标本小8%。 


Lips explained that cold-blooded animals like salamanders often shrink when the surroundings become warmer. She added that the decrease in body size is crucial for salamanders’ reproduction and survival.

Lips说,像蝾螈这样的冷血动物,当周遭环境变暖时其体型便会缩小。她进一步补充道:缩小体型对于蝾螈的繁殖与生存而言是至关重要的。


To know how the decreased size affects the salamanders, Michael Sears [seerz] of Clemson University created a simulation on the life of smaller salamanders. He estimated how much energy the modern salamanders use compared with the bigger salamanders from the past. Sears concluded that the current salamanders spend about 7% to 8% more energy than their predecessors.

为了弄清楚缩小的体型对蝾螈有何种影响,克莱姆森大学的Michael Sears设计了一套模拟小型蝾螈生命系统的装置。他测算出了现代蝾螈相较于过去大体型蝾螈所需能量的差值。Sears断定现代蝾螈要比它们的祖先多消耗7%到8%的能量。


According to Lips, further studies will be conducted to know if the current salamanders can still adapt to the changing environment.

Lips表示,他们还将进一步进行研究,以确认现代蝾螈是否依然适应不断变化的环境。
