Expressive Qualities of Line

As our eyes move along a line, “reading” it, our visual perception system seems to interpret our eye movements as characterizing the line itself. If a line creates sharp peaks (see the uppermost line in the figure below), the eye cannot scan it easily. Its progress is constantly interrupted, giving us a rather uneasy feeling.

A line without sharp angels or curves can be read quickly and easily, but if there are breaks in it, as in the second line, they slow the canning process. Such characteristics of lines tend to make us assign emotional qualities to them. Artists use this tendency to control our emotional response to a work.

For example, sharply angled lines may be used to evoke feelings of excitement, anger, danger, or chaos. A relatively flat line may be used to give a sense of calmness. A wide line that can be read quickly may be used to suggest bold strength, directness. A gentle curving line may be used to suggest unhurried pleasure.

The reclining rocking chair by the Austrian firm of Thonet suggests visually, by its long, flowing lines, the restful feelings that one expect to experience when lying in the chair. As the lines flow through lengthened curves, it is difficult to follow one single line. Rather, we are drawn visually to the abstract expressive quality of the lines: the sense of languid movement.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Michael Thornet had perfected a process of steaming and bending wood that allowed the creation of these plant-like lines and greatly reduced the need for structural joints in furniture. Many of his graceful bentwood designs have continued in production to this day.

Expressive lines in two-dimensional works often have a gestural quality. That is, they directly reveal the artist’s arm at work, transferring expressive gestures into marks on a surface. In Eliza Schulte’s Alphabet, two very different kinds of calligraphic gestures are contrasted.

The wide lines spelling ALPHABET convey the sense that they have been carved forever in stone; we can picture the artist with feet firmly planted, making exaggerated vertical strokes with her brush. The thin letters seem to dance lightly and gracefully around them. One imagines their being made with large, flowing gestures with no breaks in the arm movement.
