Many years ago,trains looked very different from today. They
were noisy and dirty. The engines burned coal and puffed clouds of black smoke.
The cars rocked back and forth,lurching from side to side.For the passengers, it
was a rough, jolting ride.

许多年前,火车看起来与今天的火车有很大的区别。它们嘈杂、肮脏,发动机燃烧的是煤并且喷着滚滚黑烟。车厢来回摇晃,从一边倒到另一边。对于乘客来讲,这是一次艰苦、颠簸的行程。

The first trains were fast. They were much faster than
horses or steamboats. People thought that trains were the best way to travel
across the country.

第一批火车很快。他们远远快于马或轮船。全国的人们都认为火车是最好的旅行方式。

In 1870, it took about six months to travel by covered wagon
from Ohio to California. It took only one to two weeks for a train to travel the
same distance. No wonder people wanted to travel by train!

在1870年,从俄亥俄到加州乘坐篷车需花了半年的时间。同样的距离火车只要花了一到两周时间旅行。难怪人们都想乘火车旅行。

Every train journey began at a train station, or depot.
Passengers waited on the platform for the train to arrive.

每列火车旅程的起点都在火车站,或停车场。乘客在月台上等火车的到来

If the weather was bad, passengers waited inside a crowded
waiting room.

如果天气不好,乘客就在拥挤的等候室等候。

After the passengers boarded the train, a conductor walked
through the car. The conductor called out "Tickets, please!" and punched the
tickets.

乘客上了火车之后,售票员穿过汽车,喊道“请出示车票!”并在票上打孔。

Sometimes the conductor helped passenger put their suitcase
and satchels up on the luggage rack.

有时售票员会帮助乘客把他们的手提箱和背包摆上行李架。

The engineer, or driver of the train, sat in the engine
cabin at the front of the train. Behind the engine was the coal car. The fireman
added coal to the engine fire. The coal was used to make the engine run. It was
a hot, dirty job.

火车的工程师或司机,坐在火车前部的发动机机舱。引擎背后。煤车,锅炉工给发动机添煤使其着火。煤是用来使发动机运行的。那是个酷热,肮脏的工作。
