Watching TV, and Looking Inward

1. From the way people talk about the avalanche of reality TV that has come to the small screen since "Survivor" made its debut in the summer of 2000, you’d think we were buried under piles of human waste like the crew of "Hoarders" sometimes discovers.

2. There’s no longer any question that reality TV is viable, economical, engaging and entertaining. Yes, it can be ridiculous. And yes, reality shows are cast for conflict, and contexts are controlled. The presence of cameras and producers may affect what happens, and footage must be edited to condense time and construct a narrative. As viewers, we’re often judgmental, petty and cruel, and that can profoundly affect the people on our screens.

3. All of this is worthy of discussion and debate, but when people dismiss an entire genre they ignore the wide range of programs, from the abhorrent to the artistic. It is too easy and intellectually lazy.

4. What is now clear, however, is that reality television reveals a lot about humanity. It is at once a window and a mirror, showing how real people react and interact in extraordinary situations. It also forces us to consider how we’d respond — and how we are responding to what we watch. As a reality TV critic, I react to what’s on my TV every day, and while I’m sometimes not proud of my emotional responses, I try to learn from them.

5. The ongoing discomfort with reality TV reveals our culture’s tendency to freak out about things that scare us, including how other people interact, think and live.

6. Nonfiction can be frighteningly raw. While fiction comforts us with the knowledge that actors are delivering lines crafted by writers, reality television offers no protective cover. Here, even lives are at risk. We must face ourselves and each other.

7. That’s television worthy of our attention.
