Tips for learning foreign languages

Author: Frank (HerrKamel)

I guess you all know I like learning foreign languages. But few of you might know I’ve been learning more than three foreign languages since I was a freshman at university. Today I am not going to talk about why I learn these foreign languages, but how I manage to learn them, or in other words, some tips I would like to share with you.

First tip is: try to clarify your motivation before start learning a new foreign language. It is essential to know the direction first before you march to your destination. Why should I learn how to pronounce and spell “linear algebra” in French when I just want to travel in Australia for a week? How could I not be familiar with those chemical names in English if I would give a presentation at an international conference as a biochemist? So by knowing why you need this foreign language, you could narrow down the path of learning, which is far more efficient than going for everything.

Second tip is: Never try to master a foreign language in a short time, like several months. I know someone has posted some tips and tricks in Wechat that one has could master a foreign language within 6 months. I doubt how he or she managed that, even with a very intensive training or crash course. In my opinion, as an adult, to learn a foreign language till advanced level is a very time consuming procedure. Take me for example: I have been practicing my oral English all through these years since I was a master student, and I have gone through TOEFL and GRE test, still I feel sometimes I could not speak in a proper way or select the right word when I write a report. However, one thing for sure is the longer you keep learning, the better language skill you will obtain.

Third tip is: Don’t focus too much on your pronunciation unless you have a problem to be understood. I have seen many colleague students nowadays are trying to imitate either British or American accent, but sometimes they are going too far. In most cases, they thought the one must be good at English if his or her speaking sounds like natives. However, language is far more than pronunciation. Most Indians are excellent at English though they still have strong Indian accents. On the other hand, some people do have problem if their pronunciation is not correct, because others couldn’t understand. In this case, I recommend spending some time correcting pronunciation. In addition, in my personal point of view, it’s a bit charming to have a bit accent other than complete vanishing it.

Last tip is: The best learning tricks are those specific for you. I have been asked many times by my students at Hujiang for those tricks to learn a foreign language well, no matter it’s English or German, or some others. But I always tell them to find their own way. I used to recite the whole book of new concept English when I was at the second year at university. It helped me a lot for my writing skills. However, it wouldn’t work if someone wants to improve their oral English through the same approach. Recently, I have found it’s very effective to memorize words by etymology, for example,“curtail”, “cur” is from old French “court” with meaning of “short”; while“tail” is from latin with meaning of “cut” like in “tailor”, so all together“curtail” means “cut it short”. Moreover, I use my existing language skills to expand or accelerate my learning on some other foreign languages, such like learn Danish vocabulary by German, or learn Korean grammar by Japanese. For example:

læse– lesen – read;

forstå- verstehen- understand;

another example:

明日友達たちと一緒に映画を見に行くができますか?

친구들이랑 같이 영화를 보러 있어요?

(明天你能和朋友们一起去看电影吗?).

I suppose such comparative grammar learning is not easily handled by beginners.

At last but not least, as a foreign language “super learner”, I really hope you could enjoy the journey of learning, not only ultimate command of a foreign language. By the way, I heard being bilingual could help reduce the risk of getting Alzheimer‘s when you become old. So let’s keep learning and have great fun from it! Thank you!
