RESEARCH ON BILINGUAL EDUCATION

There are strong advantages for simultaneous bilingual learning. Remember Petitto’s (2009) finding that monolingual English speakers who participated in a bilingual program excelled in the skills needed for reading in both languages. When the National Literacy Panel on Language—Minority Children and Youth reviewed studies of English-only immersion versus native language maintenance programs, they found that the students in the native language maintenance programs performed better on many different measured outcomes (Francis, Lesaux, & August, 2006). In a study that directly compared immersion and maintenance programs in 128 classrooms in Texas and California, Lee Branum-Martin and his colleagues (2010) found that the amount of teaching conducted in English and Spanish could not be predicted by type of program—there were many local variations. Some English immersion teachers used quite a bit of Spanish and some Spanish language maintenance programs taught quite a bit in English. Another finding was that Spanish language maintenance programs had a positive impact on English performance. A study funded by the U.S. Department of Education (Gersten et al., 2007) identified five major recommendations for English learners, summarized here (Peregoy & Boyle, 2009).

1. Begin instruction with a formative assessment (see C hapter 15 ) of reading to determine exactly what the English learners know and what they are ready to learn, and to identify students who will need more help in reading.

2. Use small-group interventions to focus instruction on the areas of need identified in the assessments.

3. Target teaching essential vocabulary for the content in your curriculum as well as common words, phrases, and expressions used class.

4. Directly teach academic English—develop the students’ abilities to read texts, write academic assignments, and use formal language and argument.

5. Make wide use of peer-assisted learning, particularly work in pairs, to complete academic tasks.
