Part 1

如 a beautiful old read and green carpet.

如果前面形容词的含义相反,可以在两个形容词前用 but,如 a small but tasty meal;

Part 2  sentences

Mr. White, I'm very pleased to make your acquaintance.
May I introduce myself? My name is Anne Kennedy. I'm a secretary. You can call me Anne. 秘书
Haven't we met somewhere before? I'm Sue. At the moment I'm working for a toy company.
Gee, let me see. It's an unusual name. It's on the tip of my tongue , but I just can't get it out.

Part 3 conversation

Morning, Tom.
Hi, Mary.
You seem to be in a hurry.
Yes. I've got a meeting in a minute.
OK. I won't hold you up then.
Right. I'll see you later.
See you later.

hold sb/sth up: to make sb / sth late; to cause a delay    耽误

Nice and warm again, isn't it?
Oh, it's lovely.
Think of the nasty weather we have had last week.
 How are you these days?
Fine, thank you. And you?
Fine today, though a bit under the weather last week.
nasty: very bad or unpleasant

under the weather: not very well [informal]  身体不舒服【非正式说法】

Hi, Mary, it's been a long time.
Hello, my old friend. Long time no see. How are you doing?
Well, I'm doing OK. And how about yourself? Not so well. To be honest with you, I broke up with Tom.

Oh. I'm sorry to hear that. What happened?

break up with sb : 分手

Part 4 passage

Global warming may or not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but - regardless of whether it is or isn't - we won't do much about it. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.
Al Gore calls global warming an "inconvenient truth," as if merely recognizing it could put in on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don't know enough to believe global warming, and - without major technological breakthroughs - we can't do much about it.

crisis 危机

regardless of 无论

solemn 严肃的

commitment 承诺
