Simon likes eating outside because of all the varieties of delicious Chinesefood. More important, some Chinese people like chatting while eating, so Simonhas more opportunities to practice his listening skills. In this instance, however, he is completely confused.

Dà wěi shuō tā xǐhuān nàgè dà yǎnjīng de nǚháir.

A:大伟 说她喜欢 那个 大 眼睛 的 女孩儿。

( Da Wei told me he likes that girl who has big eyes.)

Búguò tā hǎoxiàng shì yīgè huāqián dàshǒudàjiǎo de rén.

B: 不过她好像 是 一 个 花 钱 大手 大脚 的 人。

( But it seems she is very extravagant with money.)

Zhēnde ma ?Lìlì shì tā shìyǒu ,yīnggāi zhīdào ba ?

A: 真的吗?丽丽是她室友,应该知道吧?

(Really? Lily is her roommate, and she must be very familiar with her.)

Xū ,búyào gàosù tā ,tā shì gè dàzuǐbā !

B: 嘘,不要告诉她,她 是 个 大 嘴巴!

(Shhh, don’t let her know about this, because she is a blabbermouth.)

In this dialogue, there are many “大”(big), which are used to describe parts of the body including 眼睛(eyes), 手(hands),脚(feet),嘴巴(mouth),but not all of them refer to the literal meaning.

Generally, the word “大” (dà) means big; for example “大眼睛“ means big eyes. However, on some occasions when the word “大(dà)is combined with certaincharacter, it can create words with new meanings, such as “大手大脚(dà shǒu dà

jiǎo)” and “大嘴巴(dà zuǐ bā).” Literally, “大手大脚(dàshǒu dàjiǎo)” means big hands and big feet, but its meaning in usage is more idiomatic than literal. It means that one is wasteful and very extravagant with money. “大嘴巴(dà zuǐba) literally means big mouth. We usually use it to indicate that someone cannot keep a secret and often spreads gossip widely. In other words, the person is a blabbermouth.
